Blooming like a desert poppy in Southern California’s Coachella Valley is Desert Kid Coffee, a new destination roastery cafe that officially opened its doors this month, offering a curated experience of scratch-made pastries, house-roasted coffees, and a distinctively breezy desert-living spirit. Located in the heart of Palm Desert, the 5,400-square-foot establishment is poised to become a significant player in the region’s burgeoning specialty coffee landscape.
The expansive corner location is a testament to thoughtful design, maximizing natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows that grace two of its exterior walls. This architectural choice not only floods the interior with the characteristic desert sunshine but also creates an inviting and airy ambiance. A prominent garage door further blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, opening the cafe’s plush, couch-lined lounge area onto an ample patio. This seamless transition enhances the sense of scale and embraces the open-air lifestyle that defines the Coachella Valley.
The interior design thoughtfully integrates natural elements to evoke a sense of warmth and local connection. Natural wood chairs, benches, and wall paneling provide a tactile and inviting feel. The aesthetic is further refined by sandy-white tiles that extend along a lengthy wall behind the coffee bar, transitioning into elegantly stained wooden display shelves. The tables and millwork showcase stain colors that subtly echo the hues of regional palm trees, while the dark countertops are artfully embedded with sand-like speckles, creating a subtle yet consistent nod to the desert environment.

"What we wanted people to walk in and feel is that it is inherently local, that it was built by locals and built for them," Desert Kid Co-Founder Katie Reed shared with Daily Coffee News. "Building a brand out here in the Coachella Valley to celebrate it, we wanted to make sure that all of our visual identity focused around this place in particular." This commitment to local identity is evident in every detail, from the materials used to the overarching design philosophy.
A Hub for Coffee Craftsmanship and Community
At the heart of Desert Kid Coffee’s operation lies a dedication to the art and science of coffee. A striking feature of the cafe is the slow bar, distinguished by vibrant blue geometric tiles on its facade. This area is equipped with a Modbar Pour-Over 2.0 system, catering to meticulous brewing methods. Beyond this artisanal brewing station, a glass-enclosed roastery offers patrons a transparent view of the coffee processing in action. Here, an IMF RM15 roaster, operated by Desert Kid Co-Founder and Head Roaster Joseph Eccles, hums with activity. Eccles meticulously selects green coffees, often sourced through esteemed importers such as Royal Coffee and Red Fox Coffee Merchants.
The roastery’s presence within the cafe space is a deliberate choice, designed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the journey of coffee from bean to cup. This transparency allows customers to witness the transformation of raw coffee beans into the aromatic brews they enjoy, demystifying the roasting process and highlighting the craftsmanship involved.
Eccles expressed a forward-looking vision for the company’s sourcing strategy, indicating a desire to increase direct sourcing from coffee producers over time. This initiative has already begun, evidenced by a recent collaboration with Panorama Coffees, a vertically integrated Guatemalan green coffee company. "Our first special release, for instance, was a Geisha natural, dried on raised beds, processed meticulously and just a delicious, balanced cup," Joseph Eccles stated. "Finding a way to balance bringing in some blenders from direct trade but also highlighting the special nature of those producers and some of the things that they do is the long-term goal." This approach not only supports coffee farming communities but also allows Desert Kid Coffee to offer unique and exceptional micro-lot coffees to its clientele.

The Genesis of Desert Kid Coffee
The inception of Desert Kid Coffee is rooted in a long-standing friendship and a shared passion for the Coachella Valley. Reed and Eccles, who have known each other since childhood in the region, embarked on a two-year journey to bring their vision to life. Their collaboration extended to working closely with Coffee Heroes Solutions, a Las Vegas-based entity and an official U.S. partner of Italy’s IMF Roasters. This partnership was instrumental in developing the comprehensive business plan, refining the coffee program, and overseeing the design, construction, and equipping of the roastery cafe.
Prior to her return to the desert and the founding of Desert Kid Coffee, Reed honed her skills in product and engineering roles within the tech industry in New York City. Her experience includes co-founding Balanced, a venture-backed digital fitness platform. Eccles, on the other hand, transitioned into coffee roasting after a career as a high school English teacher. This diverse background of their founders brings a unique blend of entrepreneurial acumen, technological understanding, and a deep appreciation for craft to the new venture.
State-of-the-Art Equipment and Culinary Delights
Desert Kid Coffee is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery to ensure a high-quality coffee experience. The main bar features two Modbar Brew and Steam stations, each paired with a Mahlkönig E80S GbW grinder and a Puqpress M5 auto-tamper. These advanced tools underscore the commitment to precision and consistency in every beverage served.
Beyond coffee, the cafe boasts a robust culinary program. A Bluewater purification and remineralization system is employed to treat the water used in all coffee equipment, recognizing water’s critical role in flavor extraction. The kitchen offers a range of toasts and light bites, complemented by an extensive baking program that includes freshly baked breads, delicate pastries, and artisanal laminated goods. This holistic approach ensures that Desert Kid Coffee provides a complete sensory experience for its patrons.

Customers have the option to enjoy their selections both indoors, in the thoughtfully designed seating areas, and through a convenient walk-up window, catering to diverse preferences and schedules.
A Vision for Local Celebration and National Recognition
The overarching vision for Desert Kid Coffee is to create a brand that is intrinsically tied to its hometown. Reed articulated this ambition, stating, "Creating a hometown coffee brand is the primary vision, while the long-term goal is to grow the brand into a national representation of the Coachella Valley." This dual focus aims to first serve and celebrate the local community while simultaneously building a brand that can resonate on a broader scale.
The founders draw inspiration from successful regional coffee brands, envisioning Desert Kid Coffee achieving a similar level of recognition and association. "We’re already hitting it on the head to be able to celebrate our local community and to build a space that can host them and have people connect," Reed elaborated. "But you shoot to the moon and then you land amongst the stars. As Stumptown is for Portland, so how Desert Kid Coffee could be to the Coachella Valley and then nationally known." This ambitious outlook suggests a commitment to quality, innovation, and community engagement that could propel Desert Kid Coffee to significant success.
Impact and Implications for the Coachella Valley
The arrival of Desert Kid Coffee represents more than just a new cafe; it signifies a growing trend of specialty businesses investing in and elevating the Coachella Valley’s cultural and economic landscape. As the region continues to attract a diverse population and a growing number of tourists, the demand for high-quality, locally-rooted establishments is on the rise. Desert Kid Coffee’s emphasis on local sourcing, craftsmanship, and community building positions it to capitalize on this demand.

Furthermore, the presence of an in-house roastery sets a new benchmark for coffee quality and education in the area. By making the roasting process visible and accessible, Desert Kid Coffee can foster a more informed consumer base and inspire other local businesses. The founders’ background in technology and entrepreneurship also suggests a potential for innovative business practices and a forward-thinking approach to brand development, which could have a ripple effect across the local business community.
The strategic location in Palm Desert, a central hub within the valley, ensures accessibility for a wide range of residents and visitors. The cafe’s design, which embraces the indoor-outdoor lifestyle, is particularly well-suited to the desert climate and the preferences of its target audience.
The long-term aspiration of becoming a national representation of the Coachella Valley is ambitious but achievable, particularly if Desert Kid Coffee continues to prioritize the exceptional quality of its coffee and the authentic experience it offers. As the specialty coffee market matures, consumers increasingly seek brands that offer not just a product, but a story, a connection to place, and a commitment to ethical practices. Desert Kid Coffee appears to be laying the groundwork for precisely that.
