The 800-square-foot establishment, strategically located in Raleigh’s historic Olde East neighborhood, has transformed a former 1920s laundromat into a vibrant space that blends industrial charm with a deeply personal, nostalgic aesthetic.
The cafe’s design immediately evokes a sense of stepping back in time, a deliberate choice by co-founder Kristin Kulik. Exposed red brick walls form a striking backdrop, a stark contrast to the polished gleam of the Kees van der Westen Mirage Duette espresso machine that commands attention at the bar. Kulik, a seasoned veteran of the hospitality industry with approximately 15 years of experience in coffee shops, restaurants, and cafes across Orlando, Seattle, and North Carolina, first launched The Left Hook Coffee in Orlando. The company began its retail presence with pop-up events in 2021. The strategic relocation to Raleigh in 2022 was driven in part by Atkins’s pursuit of an MBA at UNC, his background in accounting and urban planning providing a valuable complementary skill set to Kulik’s operational expertise.
Behind the scenes, the roasting operations are managed by head roaster Quinlan Terry. Using a 15-pound-capacity Buckeye Coffee Roasters machine, Terry oversees the production of Left Hook’s coffee beans from a dedicated 600-square-foot facility located about a mile from the cafe. The company sources the majority of its green coffee from De La Finca, an importer based in Holly Springs, North Carolina. This local partnership underscores Left Hook’s commitment to supporting regional businesses within the coffee supply chain.
"When sourcing green coffee, we look into the farmer’s ethos and how the coffee is processed," Kulik explained, highlighting their meticulous approach to selection. "We like to showcase coffees that cover the spectrum of ‘classic’ to ‘funky’ profiles." This dedication to variety ensures a diverse and engaging coffee experience for their customers, catering to a wide range of preferences, from those who appreciate traditional flavor profiles to those seeking more adventurous and experimental brews.
The official launch of The Left Hook Coffee cafe on August 1st was an event that truly embodied the company’s spirited approach. They pulled out all the stops with a six-hour, circus-themed block party that transformed the neighborhood. The festivities included live music that set a lively atmosphere, professional wrestling performances that mirrored the brand’s “Left Hook” moniker, a bouncy house and dunk tank for family fun, and even flash tattoo artists for a touch of edgy excitement. "The amount of people that showed up to support not just our opening but 40-plus local businesses was overwhelming," Kulik expressed, reflecting on the success and community engagement of the opening day.
