Husband-and-wife co-founders Nikki Jin and Eli Wang have unveiled Monolith Coffee, a new coffee destination in Alhambra, California, that distinguishes itself through its house-roasted beans, an experimental seasonal drink concept, and a unique architectural design rooted in stone, openness, and a spirit of exploration. Opened earlier this year, Monolith Coffee aims to carve a distinct niche within the burgeoning Los Angeles coffee scene.

"Monolith Coffee began with a simple idea: a genuine love for coffee and a desire to create something of our own," Wang shared with Daily Coffee News. This foundational passion has manifested in a space that challenges conventional coffee shop aesthetics and operational models.

A Design Rooted in Stone and Openness

The interior of Monolith Coffee is a deliberate homage to its name. Cream-toned walls and natural stone finishes dominate the aesthetic, creating an atmosphere of grounded tranquility. Rocks of varying hues and sizes are artfully integrated throughout the space – suspended from the ceiling, serving as the bases for tables, incorporated into counter designs, and adorning small interior gardens. This tactile and visual emphasis on stone extends to Monolith’s coffee packaging, reinforcing the brand’s unique identity.

"One of our goals from the beginning was to create a space that felt genuinely different from anything else in the greater SGV area," Wang elaborated. "We never approached the project by asking what a coffee shop was supposed to look like. We believe that no type of business should be confined to a predetermined layout or aesthetic." This philosophy is evident in the shop’s layout, which dedicates a substantial portion of its floor plan to the bar area, allowing for an unobstructed view of the drink preparation process for customers. This transparency in craftsmanship is a key element of the Monolith experience.

Craftsmanship from Roaster to Cup

At the heart of Monolith Coffee’s operation is Eli Wang’s meticulous approach to coffee sourcing and roasting. All the coffee served at the cafe is roasted in-house by Wang, utilizing sophisticated equipment. His roasting arsenal includes a Stronghold S7X machine, complemented by a recently acquired Stronghold S8X, a mid-range roaster designed for enhanced precision and flexibility. This commitment to in-house roasting allows for unparalleled control over the flavor profiles of their offerings.

Wang’s expertise extends to the selection of green coffee beans. He partners with boutique traders known for their dedication to quality and ethical sourcing. Notable among these are Panamanian coffee specialist Panda Bear Express and Hacea Coffee Source, both recognized for their commitment to exceptional beans and direct relationships with producers. This careful curation of beans forms the foundation for Monolith’s diverse and nuanced coffee menu.

The "In Four Movements" Culinary Concept

Complementing the carefully sourced and roasted coffee is an innovative and experimental seasonal drink and food menu curated by Nikki Jin. Titled "In Four Movements," this concept draws inspiration from classical music compositions, where distinct movements build upon each other to create a cohesive narrative. Each "movement," corresponding to a season, presents a new chapter in an ongoing story, incorporating symbols and flavors from various Asian regions.

"Rather than treating each menu change as an opportunity to simply introduce something new, we wanted every transition to contribute to a larger narrative," Wang explained. This approach transforms the seasonal menu from a series of isolated offerings into an immersive, evolving experience for patrons.

The current menu chapter, "Monsoon," pays homage to Southeast Asia. It features four drinks, each representing a distinct element: heat, tide, downpour, and breath. For instance, the "Heat" drink is a single-origin Ethiopian cold brew enhanced with a "Spiced Coconut Oil Wash" and a "Red Pepper Syrup." This syrup, crafted from red bell pepper, Thai chili, and lemon juice, is finished with a Tajín rim and a fresh Thai chili, offering a complex interplay of spice, citrus, and cooling notes.

Beyond these more intricate creations, Monolith Coffee also offers a "Seasonal Highlights" menu. This collection aims to explore the same thematic inspirations in a more playful and approachable manner. A recent example is the "Coconut Elephant," an iced beverage featuring espresso, coconut milk, cream, Thai tea, and palm sugar, designed for broader appeal while retaining a connection to the seasonal narrative.

A Symphony of Barista Equipment

The operational prowess of the Monolith Coffee bar is supported by a suite of high-end equipment. Two Mazzer grinders meticulously prepare beans for Slayer espresso machines, renowned for their precision and customization capabilities. A Ditting 807 grinder is dedicated to grinding retail coffee, ensuring freshness for home brewers. For pour-over coffee, an Option-O Lagom 01 is employed, prized for its consistency and ability to highlight delicate flavor notes. Further refining the espresso experience, an FM Grinder Yoda 100 is used for single-origin espressos, allowing for specific and tailored extraction.

The Genesis of Monolith Coffee

The journey to Monolith Coffee began with Eli Wang’s personal evolution within the coffee world. While he previously worked as a barista, his deeper immersion into specialty coffee began during his pursuit of a Master of Fine Arts in photography at the Pratt Institute in New York. It was during these formative years that the concept for a unique coffee establishment started to take shape. Following his graduation, Wang and Jin began the intricate process of planning and developing Monolith Coffee.

Nikki Jin’s contribution to Monolith is equally significant, though her path into the coffee industry was more organic. "Nikki did not come from a professional coffee background," Wang noted. "Her involvement grew entirely out of personal interest and curiosity, which gradually evolved into an important part of Monolith." Jin’s passion and personal exploration have made her an integral force in menu development, including the selection of baked goods from local Los Angeles-based provider Out of Thin Air.

Cultivating Inclusivity in Specialty Coffee

A core tenet of Monolith Coffee’s philosophy is to demystify and welcome newcomers into the world of specialty coffee, rather than alienate them with perceived exclusivity. The founders believe that their nontraditional menu and design are key to achieving this goal.

"For us, good service is about guiding rather than educating," Wang stated. "We want to lower the barrier to entry without reducing the depth of the experience." This approach emphasizes approachability and personal connection, ensuring that every customer feels comfortable and engaged, regardless of their prior knowledge of specialty coffee.

Future Horizons: Expansion and Organic Growth

Looking ahead, Monolith Coffee is laying the groundwork for significant expansion. The co-founders are currently planning a separate warehouse facility that will provide dedicated space for Monolith’s growing roasting operations. This move is strategically designed to support increased production and maintain quality as the business scales.

Concurrently, Monolith Coffee intends to enter the wholesale market and broaden its online coffee sales. This expansion will be guided by a principle of slow, organic growth, reflecting the deliberate and enduring nature of their brand. "Like any proper monolith, the idea is permanence, not speed," Wang emphasized.

The name "Monolith" itself carries profound meaning for Wang, deeply intertwined with his personal worldview. "The name Monolith is closely tied to my personal outlook on life," he shared. "As a lifelong science fiction fan, in many of the stories I love, monoliths symbolize something timeless that transcends generations. They carry a sense of mystery while also inspiring curiosity, imagination, and discovery." This philosophical underpinning guides the brand’s aspirations for longevity, impact, and a lasting impression on the community.

Monolith Coffee is located at 43 East Valley Boulevard in Alhambra, California. The establishment stands as a testament to a vision that prioritizes craftsmanship, innovative culinary concepts, intentional design, and a commitment to making the intricate world of specialty coffee accessible and inviting to all.
